[98 | Abstract] | He plethora of different radio programmes reflects general structures oriented towards specific central themes. For the purpose of analysis, these may be divided into three dimensions: Information, education and entertainment. At various times, these take on quite distinct forms. Radio during the Weimar Republic was oriented towards instruction: Classical music, literature and the spreading of knowledge formed the centre of its programming. By way of comparison, entertainment was assigned a subordinate role and was, stylistically speaking, seldom state-of-the-art. Information was given limited air-time and was generally neutral as regards ist contents. He National Socialists introduced radical changes. Education was pushed more and more into the background. Instead, greater emphasis was placed strictly controlled and manipulated - on information and popular entertainment. In East Germany after 1945, some attempts were made at putting into practice the concept of socialist culture, but in the end the trend followed the lines already established by the National Socialists: As the SED would not al1ow an uncontrolled dissemination of information, it was necessary to compensate for these and other restrictions by offering at least an entertaining radio programme. N West Germany, initially, a different direction was taken. A broad information programme was linked to an ambitious education one and entertainment pushed to the wall. Diverse developments in society, however, forced a change in orientation. Entertainment, which was aimed at a broader public, was already putting traditional >>cultural radio<< on the defensive even before the establishment of commercial radio. |
